An account of an Experiment
of Radio Frequency Plasma containment

Radio Frequency power applied to solenoid.

In this unauthorised experiment carried out at the Rutherford-Appleton laboratory, a radio frequency current was applied across a coil wound on gas filled glass tube (gas under low pressure), normally used for vacuum deposition of metals vaporised by radio frequency current.

As the power was increased the glow in the tube separated from the tube walls and formed a thin line of plasma down the centre of the tube.

This experiment was done casually and without notes.  The power level applied was about 100 KW and the frequency was only about 28 MHz.

About 1 cm in diameter.
Text Box: About 1 cm in diameter.
The two experimenters (myself and another man) both got into serious trouble over this activity.

Date of experiment: summer of 1969.
